Space without Limitation

By: Katherine B. Topolniski

A woman’s eyes open wide, as a young girl’s, to the sight of a great stone bird soaring through the overcast. Time and space melt into the mountains and perceptions come at her sideways.

The trees knock and invite her in. Walking through open doors with childhood eyes, the woods welcome her. A paradise of historical ways, her eyes see beyond the present, into the future and the past.

Avoiding time and layering life, a balancing act in the exchange of intelligence and imagination, life blends with decomposition in unforgiving and beautiful ways. Physical memory of a place remains present with the energies and elements, and becomes a dance of colour on canvas.

The tree, now a table with a flower’s shadow, making its way around, guided by the sun. Her hand sketches the flower-time-piece, mornings layered over nights and days. A chair slowly decomposes, becoming a resting place for the birds again. Old becomes new, and permission is given to create.

Karen’s Workspace

Karen Maiolo’s personality is as vibrant and multidimensional as her paintings. Karen’s thought-provoking landscapes transcend the physical realm and venture into memory and emotion.

Karen’s studio is tucked away in the industrial compound in Banff, Alberta – constantly in the flow of production, there is a collection of works-in-progress at any given time. Her adorable side kick Jimmy, is often at her feet or napping on his bed.
